The preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. (Oct 2, 1869 – Jan 30, 1948)
Gandhi dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth, or Satya. He tried to achieve this by learning from his own mistakes and conducting experiments on himself. Although Gandhi was not the originator of the principle of nonviolence, he was the first to apply it in the political field on a large scale.
